3 Days Tour From Marrakech To Erge Chegaga

Day 1 : Marrakech – Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Agdez – Zagora

Early departure towards the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters. Visit the historic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and filming location for movies such as Obelix, Gladiator, and Babel. Lunch will be served in the heart of the Kasbah Tamnougalt before continuing south across the Anti-Atlas Mountains. Along the way, discover the breathtaking Draa Valley, with its lush palm groves, traditional ksour, douars, and charming adobe houses. Overnight stay in a hotel with half-board accommodation.

Day 2: Zagora – M’hamid – Erg Chegaga

After visiting the pottery workshops and the ancient Koranic library of Tamegroute, continue the journey towards M’hamid. The route unfolds through sandy wadis and patches of diverse greenery, far from the usual nomadic settlements. Upon arrival at Erg Laabidlia, a spectacular desert bivouac awaits you. You may also choose to enjoy a camel ride before spending the night beneath the magical starry sky of the Moroccan Sahara.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga Foum Zguid – Marrakech

After breakfast, depart early towards the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The journey follows part of the legendary Dakar Rally route, passing by the beautiful Iriqui Lake and the town of Foum Zguid before reaching Taznakht, a traditional Berber settlement. Here, numerous women’s cooperatives keep alive the art of creating the region’s renowned Berber carpets, using a variety of techniques such as weaving, knotting, and embroidering. The trip then continues across the majestic High Atlas Mountains before returning to Marrakech.

Erg Chegaga is a younger and less-visited desert destination, located in the far southeast of Marrakech near the Algerian border. The dunes lie more than 60 kilometers from the nearest town, Mhamid, making the landscape feel vaster and wilder.

A trip to Erg Chegaga offers a truly authentic and rustic experience, with no nearby hotels or modern facilities. Reaching these remote Sahara dunes requires at least a 3-day journey, passing through Ait Benhaddou, the palm groves of the Draa Valley, and stretches of rocky desert before arriving at this untouched wilderness.
